Kedarnath sits at over 3,500 metres above sea level, and weather here behaves very differently from the plains. Understanding what to expect each month helps you pack correctly and plan a safer, more comfortable journey.

General Climate Overview

Kedarnath has a cold mountain climate year-round, with daytime temperatures rarely climbing much above 15°C even during the warmest months. Nights stay cold throughout the yatra season, and conditions can shift quickly, so layered clothing is essential regardless of when you travel.

May – June: Opening Season

Daytime temperatures typically range from 5°C to 15°C, dropping close to freezing overnight. Skies are generally clear, making this a popular window despite the cold mornings.

July – August: Monsoon

Heavy rainfall is common, with daytime temperatures around 10°C to 15°C. Cloud cover and fog can reduce visibility, and landslide risk increases along mountain roads. Waterproof gear becomes essential during this period.

September – October: Post-Monsoon

Late October – November: Closing Season

Temperatures drop sharply, often below freezing overnight, with an increasing chance of early snowfall. This is the final window before the temple closes for winter.

Weather in Phata

Phata sits at a lower elevation than Kedarnath itself, so temperatures here are noticeably milder — typically 5 to 10 degrees warmer than at the temple. Staying at Yadu Vilas Kedar in Phata gives you a more comfortable base to acclimatize before heading up to colder altitudes.

How Weather Affects Helicopter Flights
