Char Dham Yatra Guide: Route, Order & Travel Tips

Char Dham Yatra route guide

The Char Dham Yatra covers four of Uttarakhand's most sacred shrines — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. For many pilgrims, Kedarnath is the most physically demanding and spiritually significant stop of the entire circuit.

The Four Dhams

Recommended Route Order

Most pilgrims follow the traditional clockwise order: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and finally Badrinath. This sequence generally works best with the region's road geography, minimising unnecessary backtracking between shrines.

How Long Does the Full Yatra Take?

A complete Char Dham Yatra by road typically takes 10–12 days, depending on your pace, weather conditions, and how many rest days you build in. Pilgrims short on time increasingly combine road travel with helicopter segments, particularly for the demanding Kedarnath leg.

Where Kedarnath Fits In

Kedarnath is widely considered the most physically challenging of the four shrines, requiring either a 16 km trek from Gaurikund or a helicopter flight from a helipad such as Phata. Many Char Dham travellers choose to rest in Phata the night before continuing to Sonprayag and Gaurikund, using our Kedarnath yatra hotel as a base for this leg of the circuit.

Registration Requirements

Each dham has its own registration process. For Kedarnath specifically, biometric registration is mandatory and completed at the counter in Sonprayag — see our Sonprayag Travel Guide for the full process.

Best Time for the Full Circuit

The Char Dham temples generally open and close around the same broad window as Kedarnath — late April/early May through October/November. September and early October tend to offer the most comfortable travel conditions across all four shrines, with thinner crowds than the May–June opening rush.
