Sonprayag Travel Guide: Parking, Registration & Stay

Sonprayag travel guide for Kedarnath pilgrims

For most pilgrims, Sonprayag is where the Kedarnath Yatra begins to feel real. It's the last point private vehicles can travel to, the place where yatra registration is completed, and the starting point of the shuttle journey onward to Gaurikund.

What Happens at Sonprayag?

Sonprayag sits at the confluence of the Mandakini and Son Ganga rivers and serves a purely functional role on the yatra route. It is not a destination in itself, but a mandatory checkpoint that every pilgrim passes through, whether trekking or taking a helicopter from Phata Helipad.

Vehicle Parking

Private vehicles are not permitted beyond Sonprayag. Designated parking areas handle the large volume of cars, taxis, and buses arriving daily during peak season. Arrive early in the day if possible, since parking areas can fill up quickly during May–June and September–October.

Biometric Registration

Every pilgrim must complete mandatory biometric registration at the Sonprayag counter before proceeding toward Gaurikund. Carry a valid, original photo ID — this is checked against your registration details. During peak season, registration queues can take a significant amount of time, so plan your morning accordingly.

The Shuttle to Gaurikund

Once registered, pilgrims travel the short remaining distance to Gaurikund, the actual trek starting point, via shared taxis or buses. This stretch is relatively short but can still involve waiting time during busy periods.

Where to Stay Near Sonprayag

Hotel options directly in Sonprayag are limited, basic, and often fully booked well in advance during peak season. Most experienced travellers instead base themselves a short drive away in Phata, where Yadu Vilas Kedar offers more reliable rooms, dependable hot water, and a proper vegetarian meal before an early departure toward the registration counter.
