Gaurikund Travel Guide: Trek Start Point Explained

Gaurikund is where the Kedarnath trek truly begins. Named after Goddess Parvati (Gauri), this small settlement marks the last point of vehicle access before the 16 km climb to the Kedarnath Jyotirlinga.
The Legend Behind Gaurikund
According to local tradition, Gaurikund is the place where Goddess Parvati performed penance to win Lord Shiva as her husband. The natural hot spring here is considered sacred, and many pilgrims take a moment to visit it before beginning their climb.
The Gaurikund Hot Spring
A natural sulphur hot spring feeds a small bathing area near the temple complex at Gaurikund. Depending on seasonal maintenance and water levels, access may vary, but it remains one of the most spiritually significant stops before the trek.
The Trek to Kedarnath
From Gaurikund, the trek to Kedarnath Temple covers approximately 16 km of mountain trail, typically taking 6–9 hours depending on fitness, weather, and rest stops. The path is well-marked and dotted with tea stalls and resting points along the way, but it remains a genuinely demanding climb for most travellers.
Pony and Palanquin Services
For pilgrims unable to complete the trek on foot, Gaurikund has a well-established pony and palanquin (doli) stand. Rates vary by season and demand, so it's worth confirming current pricing on arrival. These services are especially popular with elderly pilgrims and those travelling as part of a family group.
Where to Stay Before the Trek
Accommodation directly in Gaurikund is limited and fills up fast during peak season, with basic facilities compared to hotels further down the route. Most pilgrims prefer to rest the night before in nearby Phata, where Yadu Vilas Kedar offers a comfortable, quiet room a short drive away — ideal for a proper night's sleep before the climb.
